Landscape science and landscape planning, cartography, and geographic information systems (GIS), environmental management are being discussed by more than 100 researchers from 12 countries at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU). The international conference – “Landscape Dimension of Sustainable Development: Research, Cartography/GIS, Planning, Management” is dedicated to the 75th birth anniversary of Professor Nikoloz (Niko) Beruchashvili, a famous Georgian geographer and cartographer, experimentalist, and traveler. TSU Rector George Sharvashidze, Georgian and foreign scientists are attending the event.
“The conference is an appreciation of Niko Beruchashvili’s great contribution to the development of Georgian geographical and cartographic science and the introduction of innovative ideas. Georgian and foreign scientists will discuss modern research in this field and share the latest information with each other. Such an event contributes to the deepening of scientific-pedagogical ties between TSU and various universities of the world,” Rector Sharvashidze said.
Milan Konechny, Professor at the University of Brno (Czech Republic) and Vice President of the International Association of Cartography, noted that Niko Beruchashvili remains one of the world’s best cartographers. He stressed that Beruchashvili’s scientific initiatives are important and include the issues of landscape safety.
On the sideline of the conference, an exhibition of photo and video materials depicting Niko Beruchashvili’s life and work was opened at the TSU Museum.
TSU Professor Tengiz Gordeziani noted that it was announced at the international conference that one of the peaks of Saguramo-Yalno range (a 1824 meter height) was named after Niko Beruchashvili.
On the initiative of Niko Beruchashvili, chairman of the TSU Department of Cartography-Geodesy and Geoinformatics, a research laboratory for studying the natural environment using aerospace methods was established at TSU. Niko Beruchashvili was the scientific head of the Martkopi physical-geographical stationary. In 2002, Beruchashvili established and chaired the Landscape Analysis Commission at the International Geographical Union. His name is associated with the development of a new direction - the space of natural-territorial complexes - the concept of temporal analysis and synthesis in landscape science. Niko Beruchashvili gave lectures at St. Petersburg, Toulouse, Sorbonne, and other universities.
