Jaba Samushia Opens Exhibition Dedicated to Georgian Language Day

The Rector of Tbilisi State University, Academician Jaba Samushia opened an exhibition dedicated to the Georgian Language Day.

The exhibition showcased the books stored in the TSU library dedicated to the scientific study of the Georgian language and posters depicting the April 14 developments prepared by the State Language Department.

Rector Jaba Samushia delivered a speech at the opening of the exhibition, in which he discussed the April 14 developments. “It was in the courtyard of the university that the great movement started in 1978, which was aimed at protecting the Georgian language. Georgia’s recent history is based on these dates. Georgians safeguarded the primary state symbol - the Georgian language. By commemorating this date, we will once again honor the developments of that era, which laid the foundation for the subsequent restoration of Georgia’s independence,” stated Jaba Samushia.

The exhibition was organized by the TSU library and the State Language Department, and its opening was attended by Giorgi Alibegashvili, chairman of the State Language Department, representatives of the TSU library, professors and students.

Zurab Gaiparashvili, head of the TSU library, said that the library has thousands of books about the Georgian language. “To celebrate the Georgian Language Day, we opened the depositories and exhibited a small part of this literature. I would like to focus on the dissertations of Akaki Shanidze and Arnold Chikobava. It is symbolic that Akaki Shanidze’s dissertation, which was the first dissertation at the university, is about the Georgian language, and Arnold Chikobava, the author of the first dissertation among the first graduates of the university, also dedicated his work to the Georgian language,” Zurab Gaiparashvili noted.

The first thesis for which Akaki Shanidze was awarded a doctorate on May 9, 1920, was also exhibited. Arnold Chikobava’s doctoral thesis was also exhibited.
