Jaba Samushia Meets Hungarian Ambassador

Academician Jaba Samushia, the Rector of Tbilisi State University, and Anna Sikó, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary to Georgia, signed the official document of transfer of the book collection donated to the TSU Library by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary and Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE).

Rector Jaba Samushia thanked Ambassador Sikó for the gift and for her contribution to bringing Georgian-Hungarian relations as close as possible. “Hungary has always been a strategic partner from both cultural and political perspectives. The Kartvelological School in Hungary was one of the outstanding centers,” Jaba Samushia noted. According to him, the high interest in the Hungarian language is largely due to the policy pursued by the Embassy together with the Hungarian Language and Culture Center of Tbilisi State University.

Zurab Gaiparashvili, head of the TSU Library, said that the Hungarian Language, Diaspora and Balassi Programs Department of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry and Eötvös Loránd University have donated about 400 books to the TSU Library. “The TSU Library will have the largest collection of Hungarian books. These books will be placed in the reading room, included in the electronic catalog and will be available to all interested readers,” said Zurab Gaiparashvili.

At the meeting, Ambassador Anna Sikó spoke about the friendly Georgian-Hungarian relations and common values. She thanked the University for popularizing the Hungarian language and culture, as well as the students studying Hungarian language and culture. The Ambassador noted that the two countries have important cultural relations, and the goal of the Hungarian Embassy is to promote the deepening of these relations.

Árpád Éles, the head of the Hungarian language and culture course at Tbilisi State University, and students attended the event.
