Jaba Samushia Meets with Students Participating in the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition

 

The Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Academician Jaba Samushia met with the team of international law students of the Faculty of Law, who competed with the best results in the 46th international rounds of the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition in The Hague.

The TSU team took the 2nd place in the overall evaluation (the applicant’s written position and the oral presentation component). At the same time, the applicant’s written position took the 3rd place, and the respondent took the 2nd place in the oral presentation component.  

The Telders International Law Moot Court Competition has been held annually since 1977 and is the most prestigious International Law Moot Court Competition in Europe.

The TSU team was formed by the International Law Institute, Faculty of Law, TSU with students of BA and MA programs of International Law and Law – Tatia Bitsadze, Tamar Vardiashvili, Nikoloz Nurashvili and Nino Akhaladze. The coach of the team was Ketevan Chapiashvili, a graduate of the International Law Program and a participant and winner of several international and national moot court competitions. Academic and visiting staff of the Institute of International Law and graduates of the International Law Program are involved in the preparation process.

This year, 27 teams from leading European universities participated in the international rounds. The TSU team competed in the international rounds against the teams from the Netherlands, Romania, Estonia and Turkey.

The meeting was also attended by Tamar Zarandia, Dean of the Faculty of Law of TSU; Irine Kurdadze, Director of the International Law Institute of the Faculty of Law; Eka Siradze, Associate Professor of the International Law Institute of the Faculty of Law; Assistant Professor Mariam Kevlishvili and invited lecturer Tamta Zaalishvili. 

TSU Rector Jaba Samushia addressed the students: “Your success is very important for the university and for our country. We fully support you in all initiatives that serve your education and professional development.”

Dean of the TSU Faculty of Law, Tamar Zarandia said: “It is good that the team of students from the TSU Faculty of Law competed with great success and showed the best result this year at the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition. Our students competed with representatives of 27 teams from leading European universities in a serious competition, and our team entered the top three of the competition, which is a very important achievement. I would like to congratulate the team members and all those involved on their victory. We are happy that our special students always give us a reason to be proud with their achievements.”

Irine Kurdadze, Director of the International Law Institute of the Faculty of Law, Head of International Law Programs noted: “Traditionally, our students successfully compete in various international and local moot court competitions. However, this year’s result in the Telders competition is special. The success we achieved in the program would not have been possible without the support of TSU and the Faculty of Law administration. The efforts of the academics, invited staff and graduates of the International Law Institute, who are actively involved in the implementation of the program and the process of training the team, are invaluable.”  

Invited lecturer Keti Chapiashvili, head of the TSU team participating in the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition, said: “Participating in moot court competitions is the best opportunity to explore the most important issues of international law, develop advocacy skills and establish professional contacts.”
