Remembering Professor Giorgi Nadareishvili

Employees and students of the Faculty of Law of Tbilisi State University and Tinatin Tsereteli Institute of State and Law, as well as invited guests gathered to remember Professor Giorgi Nadareishvili, a great Georgian scientist. In connection with the 95th anniversary of the scientist’s birth, TSU hosted a presentation of the anniversary edition of his book “Some Issues of Georgian Legal Culture in Georgia of the XI-XII Centuries.”

Doctor of Juridical Science (1967) G. Nadareishvili was awarded the academic title of Professor of Tbilisi State University back in 1973 for his fruitful scientific and pedagogical activity. For almost half a century, from 1957 until his death, G. Nadareishvili worked at Tinatin Tsereteli Institute of State and Law, first as a research fellow and from 1984 as the Head of the State and Law History Department of the same institute. In 1998, Professor G. Nadareishvili was awarded the Order of Honor for his long and fruitful scientific and pedagogical activity.

The creative legacy of the scientist includes more than three hundred scientific works on the issues of Georgian and world law history and more than twenty monographs or textbooks. The diversity of Professor G. Nadareishvili's field of interests, the depth of his scientific research, and his integrity have largely determined the growing interest in his work. A new, Georgian-English edition of his monograph “Some Issues of Georgian Legal Culture in Georgia of the XI-XII Centuries” can be considered yet another concrete manifestation of the abovementioned.

This work was first published in 1959 by the Soviet Academy of Sciences of Georgia, and today it represents a bibliographic rarity. Considering the abovementioned, as well as the desire to take information about the rich Georgian legal culture of the XI-XII centuries abroad, and in connection with the anniversary of the scientist’s birth, at the initiative of Tinatin Tsereteli Institute of State and Law and with the support of the Law Faculty of the Tbilisi State University and the University Administration, it was decided to publish the Georgian-language monograph and its English-language translation.

The book was translated into English by the scientist’s daughter, Nino Nadareishvili. The editors are Professor Nugzar Surguladze of the TSU Faculty of Law, Associate Professor Gocha Feradze of the same faculty. Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Tamar Zarandia, Director of Tinatin Tsereteli Institute of State and Law, Professor Lasha Bregvadze, as well as Professors Tevdore Ninidze, Besarion Zoidze and Davit Sulakvelidze spoke about G. Nadareishvili’s contribution to Georgian science.

The participants noted that Nadareishvili’s book “Some Issues of Georgian Legal Culture in Georgia of the XI-XII Centuries” will help Georgian and especially foreign readers better familiarize themselves with the achievements of Georgian legal culture in the Middle Ages.
