TSU Nominates Aka Morchiladze as Candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature

The Scientific Council of the Shota Rustaveli Institute of Literature of Tbilisi State University and the professors of the Faculty of Humanities of TSU, with the majority of votes, have nominated the writer, Aka Morchiladze (Giorgi Akhvlediani) from Georgia as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

“It is obvious that Aka Morchiladze is able to write on very serious, relevant and painful topics, such as civil war and the social crisis that arose against its background, political chaos, confrontation between generations, etc. - with a touch of humor, which makes his novels especially enjoyable to read. This is the reason for his popularity. The writer focuses on modern society and its characteristic contradictions, which he analyzes with exceptional skill and determines their cause-and-effect relationships. His novels are distinguished by their genre diversity and polyphony, which makes him one of those rare writers who create memorable characters whose uniqueness remains in the memory of readers for a long time. Aka Morchiladze is a representative of a small nation, therefore he tries to present to readers (especially foreign audiences) the national flavor of his country, while simultaneously shifting the emphasis to such universal human values that are equally valued by readers of all countries. The most important thing is that Aka Morchiladze builds a different language system in his novels - the speech of his characters differs from each other depending on what age or social group they belong to. This is a kind of language experiment - a peculiar mixture of dialects from different parts of Georgia, urban speech, slang, which is replaced by an artificial dialect invented by the author himself”, - the submission reads.

Tbilisi State University received a letter from the Nobel Committee regarding the nomination of a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Since 1993, the TSU Institute of Literature has had the prerogative of nominating a candidate from Georgia for the Nobel Prize.

The Nobel Prize in Literature is one of the most prestigious awards in the world and is awarded annually to the author who, according to Alfred Nobel, has created “the best work of an idealistic nature.” The name of the 2024 Nobel Prize laureate in literature will be announced in October.
