A science festival has opened at Tbilisi State University. Held as part of Earth Week, the event aims to popularize science, spark young people’s interest in research activities, connect science with everyday life, introduce and analyze the challenges facing the Earth, and promote ecosystem restoration activities.
At the event, TSU students, young researchers, and academics presented interesting experiments, research projects, and discoveries. TSU Rector, Academician Jaba Samushia said that the university supported the student initiative to hold a science festival as part of Earth Week. Such events are important for popularizing Earth science among the younger generation. It is noteworthy that schoolchildren showed a great deal of interest in the natural sciences, demonstrating curiosity and participating in interesting experiments.
Visitors to the festival had the opportunity to touch a 4.4 billion-year-old mineral, get acquainted with ammonites which are at least 65 million years old, and participate in a variety of chemical experiments, including the chemical traffic light experiment, the iodine clock reaction, the artificial blood experiment, the golden rain experiment, the piranha solution experiment and more. They could also view flying fish, a variety of corals and microscopic invertebrate animals, operate robots assembled by students, learn about drone engineering and visit a planetarium.
Tours of the chemistry laboratory, planetarium, and mineralogy educational and scientific laboratory will be held during the week (April 19-26).
The event is organized by TSU and the American Chemical Society (ACS) Georgian Student Chapter of TSU.
Earth Week is celebrated worldwide from 19 to 26 April each year, emphasizing the importance of solving ecological problems and taking action to protect the environment.
