Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) has improved its overall ranking by 113 positions and is now ranked 322nd sharing the position with the University of Tartu (Estonia), according to U.S.News&World Report - Best Global University Rankings 2020. In 2019, TSU was ranked 435th. 

TSU is still the only university in Georgia and the region listed among the top 1.5% of the universities worldwide.  The overall Best Global Universities rankings encompass the top 1,500 institutions spread across 81 countries. As for the world’s best universities for physics, TSU has improved its ranking by 22 positions and is now ranked 256th, according to U.S.News&World Report. 

Among the universities of post-Soviet countries, only TSU and two more universities – University of Tartu and Lomonosov Moscow State University – were listed among the world’s best 325 universities. 

TSU has outranked a number of famous European and U.S. universities, among them Vienna University of Technology (Austria), Jagiellonian University (Poland), University of Turku (Finland), University of Giessen (Germany),  Kobe University (Japan), Florida Institute of Technology, Georgia and San Diego State University (the United States), University of Tampere (Finland), Technical University of Berlin (Germany), University of Stuttgart (Germany), University of Essex (UK), Masaryk University (Czech Republic), University of Coimbra (Portugal), Stellenbosch University (South Africa), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), London Business School (UK), Saarland University (Germany), University of Salamanca (Spain), University of Sofia (Bulgaria) and Friedrich Schiller University of Jena (Germany). 

For 30 years, U.S. News & World Report has been publishing rankings of the best global universities. The institutions have been ranked based on 13 indicators that measure their academic research performance and their global and regional reputations, as well as number of publications, scientific books, quality of conferences and a share of universities in the most cited publications. The survey is also built on academics’ opinions about world universities, their views of programs in the disciplines with which they were familiar. 

According to the 2020 Best Global Universities Rankings, the United States is still leading with 261 universities; Harvard University has been listed first in the rankings. The United States is followed by China with 203 universities, Japan – 97, United Kingdom – 87, Germany – 70, Italy – 60 and France – 44. 

U.S. News & World Report believes that since an increasing number of students plan to enroll in universities outside of their own country, the Best Global Universities rankings – which focus specifically on schools academic research and reputation overall and not on their separate undergraduate or graduate programs – can help those applicants accurately compare institutions around the world.
