Levan Aleksidze – 95

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) marked the 95th anniversary of Academician Levan Aleksidze, a famous Georgian scientist, public figure, diplomat and founder of a Georgian school of international law. Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze, Justice Minister Rati Bregadze, Deputy Foreign Minister Khatuna Tortladze, Chairman of the Parliament’s Education and Science Committee, Giorgi Papuashvili, Levan Aleksidze’s former students presently working in the public and non-governmental sectors, colleagues, representatives of international organizations and students attended the event.

“The majority of Georgian lawyers and diplomats who are involved in international law are connected with Levan Aleksidze’s name. Under his leadership, the Faculty of International Law and International Relations was established at Tbilisi State University, which educated a lot of highly skilled specialists in the sphere of international law. He was an expert of this field, a human rights expert. He worked at the United Nations Organization. A cabinet named after him will be opened at the University. Moreover, one of the streets in Tbilisi will be named after Levan Aleksidze. It is only a small measure the country can take to immortalize his name,” Rector Sharvashidze noted.

 Levan Aleksidze, Doctor of Law, Professor, Full Member of Georgian National Academy of Sciences, Holder of the Georgian State Award, Chevalier of the Orders: of Honor (1996), Excellence (2010), St. George (2012); Laureate of Ivane Javakhishvili Forum (2015), Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi (2011), the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, had been working at Tbilisi State University since 1950.

From the very first days of Georgia’s independence, the Georgian School of International Law was established and developed on the initiative and leadership of Professor Levan Aleksidze. The Faculty of International Law and International Relations was established at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (September 1990), which gave rise to the formation and development of the field of international law in Georgia.

Justice Minister Rati Bregadze emphasized Levan Aleksidze’s contribution to the country, especially to the establishment and development of the sphere. “I am happy to have an opportunity to communicate with him as a lecturer. Levan Aleksidze was a person who introduced Georgia to a lot of foreign friends and colleagues,” Minister Bregadze said.

A film created by TSU (author Nino Kakulia) was screened and a presentation of publications prepared by the academic staff of the Institute of International Law, including a collection of English-language articles “Selected Issues of International Law” dedicated to Levan Aleksidze’s memory was held on the sideline of the event. 

“It is difficult to live without him, but we are trying to continue his path, first of all, to develop the School of International Law at TSU, and to immortalize his name,” Prof. Irina Kurdadze, director of the TSU Institute of International Law, said.

The event ended with awarding TSU international law students participating in various extracurricular activities.
