Jaba Samushia Awards Diplomas to Honorary Doctors of TSU

A ceremony of awarding honorary doctorates was held at Tbilisi State University (TSU). During the event, the Rector of TSU, Academician Jaba Samushia awarded the diplomas of Honorary Doctor of Tbilisi State University to Dr. Bernd Heinrich, professor of the University of Tübingen, Germany, and Dr. Martin Heger, professor of the Humboldt University of Berlin.
 

According to the decisions of the Academic Council of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Prof. Dr. Bernd Heinrich and Prof. Dr. Martin Heger were awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University for their active cooperation with the University, as well as for their contribution to the scientific and educational activities of students, academic and scientific staff, and to the internationalization of the university.
 

Anri Okhanashvili, Chairman of the Legal Issues Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Merab Turava, Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Georgia, German Ambassador to Georgia, Ernst Peter Fischer, Tamar Zarandia, Dean of the Faculty of Law of TSU, Georgian and German specialists, professors and students attended the event.
 

The Rector of Tbilisi State University, Academician Jaba Samushia spoke about the contribution of German professors to the Georgian-German scientific cooperation. The Rector noted that Professors Bernd Heinrich and Martin Heger have been cooperating with Tbilisi State University for many years and have carried out scientific and research activities in Georgia. “The title of Honorary Doctor of Tbilisi State University is the highest award we give to foreign professors for their contribution to cooperation with our university. It is important for us that such high-ranking professors become our honorary doctors. Their scientific work is outstanding - a number of textbooks and articles have been prepared with their participation and support, and many of our young lawyers have become successful with their help. I hope that this cooperation will be further deepened and strengthened,” said Jaba Samushia.
 

“During my academic career, this is the most honorable award. We have a great experience of cooperation with the Faculty of Law of Tbilisi State University, we jointly implement a number of projects, and this award is the result of this cooperation,” said Professor Martin Heger, Honorary Doctor of Tbilisi State University.
 

Since 2006, Professors Bernd Heinrich and Martin Heger have been co-organizers of the Netzwerk Ost-West student exchange seminar at the Law Faculty of Humboldt University of Berlin; supervisors of Georgian PhD students at Humboldt University of Berlin and Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, and hosts of many Georgian visiting scholars; participants in many conferences and meetings in Georgia. They are also co-founders and co-editors of the German-Georgian Journal of Criminal Law (DGStZ) and the Georgian-German Journal of Digital Criminal Law Terms (DGDSG); partners of the 2016-2021 German-Georgian Criminal Law Project “Georgian Criminal Procedural Law under the Influence of European and International Law”; leaders and participants of many summer schools and projects implemented in Georgia.
 

After the ceremony of conferring the title of honorary doctor, the honorary doctors held a public discussion on the topic “Relevant Aspects of Criminal Law and Criminal Policy in Germany, Georgia and Europe” organized by the Faculty of Law of Tbilisi State University.
