The 17th International Conference of Young Archaeologists, organized by the Institute of Archaeology at Tbilisi State University’s Faculty of Humanities, opened in Vardzia. The conference is dedicated to the 150th birth anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili.
The Vardzia Conference is significant because it showcases the latest archaeological discoveries and methodologies. It gives Georgian students the opportunity to gain practical experience and familiarize themselves with research from other countries. English has been the working language since the conference’s inception, preparing Georgian students to participate in international scientific events.
Professor Vakhtang Licheli, the founder and organizer of the conference, opened the conference. Deputy Rector Erekle Astakhishvili also welcomed the audience.
The Vardzia Museum-Reserve has hosted this conference for 16 years. Tamari Hall, the conference hall, is located directly in one of the caves of the complex, making the event special.
The anniversary conference was attended by students and professors from Tbilisi State University, the Georgian National Museum, and the universities of Oxford, Innsbruck, Edinburgh, Pisa, and Jena, as well as by representatives of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Armenian Academy of Sciences.
Both Georgian and foreign students from various universities around the world presented reports at the conference.
