The Rector of Tbilisi State University, Academician Jaba Samushia met with a delegation from the University of Tsukuba (Japan). The meeting focused on cooperation between the two universities in various fields.
Rector Samushia expressed his desire for academic cooperation with Japanese colleagues. He spoke with the guests about the teaching of the Japanese language and Japanese studies, in general, at TSU. According to him, the educational module of Japanese Studies has been taught at TSU since 2007. In 2010, under a grant from the Japanese government and with the support of the Japanese Embassy in Georgia, the Center for Japanese Language and Culture was established at TSU, equipped with the latest technical means and educational literature, periodicals, audio-video materials. Lectures are held at the Center on Japanese language, Japanese history, Japanese culture, Japanese economy, historical cities of the Far East and other subjects. The Center often hosts Japanese scholars who give public lectures, as well as artists, poets, actors, and Japanese students. The Center collaborates with the Universities of Tokyo and Waseda, and participates in events organized by the Embassy of Japan.
During the meeting, Associate Professor Yusuke Kajiyama of the University of Tsukuba spoke about the prospects of signing a memorandum of understanding with TSU to facilitate future cooperation and presented two projects. The projects will include student mobility and joint scientific research.
Founded in 1973, the University of Tsukuba has approximately 17,000 students and has produced three Nobel laureates in chemistry and physics. In recognition of its world-class education and research, the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology granted the University of Tsukuba the status of “Designated National University Corporation” in 2020.
The meeting was attended by TSU Deputy Rector Erekle Astakhishvili, representatives of the Faculty of Humanities and the Department of Foreign Relations. Tbilisi State University has partnership relations with four Japanese universities: Osaka, Teikyo, Kobe and Tokyo Metropolitan Universities.
