Changes to the Rule of Electing the Rector Discussed with Student Group

Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, George Sharvashidze, Head of Administration, Lasha Saghinadze, Deputy Head of Administration, Giorgi Shamatava, Head of Legal Department, Archil Kukulava, representatives of the administration met with a student group to discuss the changes to the rule of electing the Rector.

It was noted at the meeting that the rules, procedures, and criteria for electing the Rector are regulated by the Law of Georgia on Higher Education. Accordingly, the decision on making amendments to the legislation should be made by the Parliament. It, however, is the issue that requires further discussions. George Sharvashidze informed the participants about the international experience regarding the rules of electing the Rector. The participants also focused on how to change the current legislation in Georgia by increasing the involvement of academic and scientific staff in the elections and considering democratic principles.

Meetings in a working format will continue in the future. The first meeting was held earlier this week and it covered the issues of a student dormitory and financial transparency.
