“We did not think much about who the first member of the Society should be. In collaboration with the leadership of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, we decided that this person should be the head of the most authoritative organization, and, at the same time, he should be a person respected by the public. That is why we decided to accept the Rector of TSU, historian Jaba Samushia, as the first member of the Society,” said Giorgi Kalandia.

Rector Jaba Samushia said that it is a great honor and an expression of great trust that after decades, he is the first from Georgian scientist to become a member of the Society.

“The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland has been conducting interesting research in the field of Oriental Studies for more than a century. The establishment of the associated society in Georgia is of great importance, as it will bring Georgian scholars even closer to the large family of world scientists. This will contribute to the popularization and development of Kartvelian studies, as well as to the interest of foreign scholars in this field.”

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded in 1823 by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Henry Thomas Colebrooke. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV in 1824 for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia. The Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society is published by Cambridge University Press four times a year.
