Cleveringa Lecture at TSU

Niels Blokker, Professor of International Institutional Law at Leiden University, gave a public lecture at Tbilisi State University. Titled “UN 80: Towards a Reunited Nations for the 21st Century,” the lecture was held as part of the Cleveringa Lecture series in collaboration with TSU’s Faculty of Law, Leiden University, and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Georgia.

The event was attended by the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Georgia, Meline Arakelian; the Deputy Rector of TSU, Erekle Astakhishvili; as well as students and academics.

The Cleveringa Lecture series aims to commemorate and honor Professor Rudolph Cleveringa. In a public speech on November 26, 1940, Cleveringa protested the dismissal of Jewish colleagues by the Nazi occupying forces, especially his colleague Meyers. He was arrested shortly afterwards. His speech sparked a strike among the students; the Nazis subsequently closed the university, which remained closed throughout the war.

To honor him, the Leiden University Fund organizes Cleveringa Lectures each year in numerous locations around the world.
