New Academic Year at TSU

A new academic year began at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) remotely on September 20. 5,200 students were enrolled in TSU following the Unified National Examinations. It is worth noting that every third grant recipient throughout Georgia is a TSU student.

Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze congratulated students on the beginning of the new academic year. He said that TSU students have received highest scores in the Unified National Examinations. “I congratulate all students and especially first-year students on the beginning of the new academic year. An unprecedented number of students have joined us this year – 5,200 entrants became our students. Not only TSU is known for its history, but it is the regional and nationwide leader; it is among 1.5% of the world’s best universities and offers students high quality education that is a precondition for their future achievements,” Rector Sharvashidze noted.

He expressed hope that the current epidemiological situation in the country will soon allow students to continue on-campus learning. “Up to 70% of the TSU staff and more than 40% of students have been vaccinated. If this figure significantly improves, on-campus learning and diverse student life will become more interesting,” Rector Sharvashidze added.

TSU implements up to 240 accredited programs for more than 22,000 students studying at seven faculties.

For the first time in Georgia, two programs of TSU - Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Computer Science - received accreditation of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in 2020. Later in 2021, the TSU International School of Economics (ISET) educational programs were the first in Georgia and throughout the region to receive official accreditation of FIBAA, an internationally experienced agency for quality assurance. Moreover, a joint TSU-Speyer MA Program in Public Administration again received FIBAA accreditation, meaning that graduates of these programs will receive internationally recognized diplomas that will be competitive in any country of the world.

The Tbilisi State University is meeting the new academic year with renovated infrastructure. Rehabilitation of the 2nd Building of TSU is almost over. Modern student spaces will be arranged in all buildings of TSU by the end of 2021, while rehabilitation of all main educational and research spaces will be completed by the end of 2023.
