On May 30 and 31, 2025, a conference on “Challenges of Georgia on the Road to the Europeanisation of Law: Contribution of Legal Studies” took place at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. It was the fifth such conference jointly organized by the Faculty of Law of Tbilisi State University and the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg. The conference was dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult Jürgen Basedow, honorary doctor of Tbilisi State University and former director of the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg, who passed away suddenly in 2023. Before the conference began, representatives of the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg, in accordance with Professor Basedow's will, donated some books from his personal library to the library of the Faculty of Law.
The conference brought together renowned legal scholars from ten countries. Its aim was to explain and analyze the demands of legal harmonization on countries aspiring to EU membership. Conference participants exchanged views on the experiences of EU countries, particularly in integrating EU law into national legislation, as well as on the experiences of aspiring EU countries. They discussed the problems and difficulties encountered in harmonizing the law in these countries with EU legislation and explored possible solutions.
Plans exist to publish the contributions to the conference and to continue the conference series.
