The 12th International Staff Week has opened at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University as part of the European Union’s Erasmus + program. 63 representatives from 45 TSU partner universities in 16 European countries are participating in the event.
TSU Rector, Academician Jaba Samushia welcomed the European university representatives and stated: “Georgia has always been connected to Europe and European education. This is evidenced by the academies based on the European teaching method. For the first university, founded in the Caucasus in 1918 - Tbilisi State University - international university cooperation was a priority. Foreign professors came to give lectures, and young people were sent to study in Europe. After Sovietization, all of this was destroyed. Georgia still faces significant challenges from its northern neighbor. Over the past 30 years, Georgia has experienced three wars with Russia. This once again emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in higher education - sharing ideas makes development more sustainable. Today’s gathering emphasizes the immeasurable role of cooperation in higher education in developing society. Exchanging ideas, knowledge and sharing best practices allows us to work together to create a more sustainable and just environment. TSU welcomes and supports all initiatives aimed at this goal.”
Zviad Gabisonia, the Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, said that the importance and scope of Staff Week confirm the growing interest of TSU and the Georgian education system in international cooperation. “One of the main goals of educational reform is to familiarize young people with international trends so they can compete in local and global labor markets. Georgia continues to integrate into the international education space.”
The main theme of the week is the internationalization of higher education and strengthening international academic ties. The week will include workshops, professional, and individual meetings between guests and TSU representatives to promote future academic cooperation.
The International Staff Week, a dialogue platform created to promote cooperation with leading European universities, encourages the sharing of international educational experiences, a critical understanding of the current situation in our country, and the introduction of successful European examples.
The 12th International Staff Week will end on May 8. Cultural events are also planned as part of the week.
