TSU Hosts Events for Librarian’s Day

An exhibition featuring the Borjomi collection, which is preserved in the Tbilisi State University Library, has opened in the library’s central building. The event is dedicated to Librarian's Day and is part of the 150th anniversary celebration of Ivane Javakhishvili.

Ekvtime Takaishvili took the unique Borjomi Palace Library collection to Europe in 1921, along with other treasures. Despite great opposition, he returned them to his homeland in 1936. The collection includes exceptional publications on botany, the Georgian Church and its saints, French history and art, as well as albums, maps, atlases, and fiction in various languages. According to Takaishvili’s wish, the collection was transferred to the TSU Library, where it is currently stored in the university’s secure archives.

TSU Rector, Academician Jaba Samushia noted: “I would like to congratulate all librarians on their professional day. Today, the unique Borjomi Library collection, which Ekvtime Takaishvili took to Europe with the treasures, is on display at the TSU Library. This collection is an important part of our country’s history. It is a treasure not only for TSU, but also for the entire country.”

To celebrate Librarian's Day, the TSU Central Library opened a memorial cabinet dedicated to the renowned scientist Otar Japaridze, aiming to promote his extensive scientific work. Japaridze was the author of over 120 scientific works and a laureate of the State Prize. He was also an honorary citizen of Tbilisi, and the acting rector of TSU in 1991. In 2020, his family donated his personal library, archive, and memorabilia to the TSU Library.

Members of the Friends of the Library Club and active readers were awarded.

Deputy Chairperson of the Tbilisi City Assembly, Tinatin Nibloshvili, MP Lado Bozhadze, librarians, students and representatives of the administration attended the event.
